What Makes Sunken Gardens So Special?

Sunken Gardens has a pretty interesting history. The gardens were created from an old abandoned stone quarry, transforming the space into a multi-level garden with limestone walls, footbridges, fountains, staircases, and a horseshoe-shaped pool.
And honestly, that's what makes it so fun for photography.
Instead of having one background repeated throughout an entire session, you can move around the gardens and get completely different looks.
WHY SUNKEN GARDENS IS PERFECT FOR COUPLES
a little bit of everything
One of my favorite things about Sunken Gardens is how naturally it works for couples photos. The stone bridges, water, greenery, and winding paths give you plenty of opportunities to move around and interact without feeling like you're constantly posing.
Whether you're walking hand in hand, laughing together, or simply enjoying a quiet moment, the setting makes it easy to capture genuine moments while still creating beautiful, timeless portraits.
For couples who want photos that feel romantic, relaxed, and natural, Sunken Gardens is definitely a location worth considering.
A HIDDEN GEM IN HUNTINGTON
If you're looking for a unique location for couples or engagement photos in Northeast Indiana, Sunken Gardens in Huntington, Indiana is one location you shouldn't overlook.
Tucked inside Memorial Park, Sunken Gardens has a completely different feel from a typical outdoor photography location. With its historic stone walls, footbridges, water, greenery, and natural surroundings, it creates a beautiful backdrop for romantic and timeless photos.
Stone Bridges & Water
The stone bridge is one of my favorite features for photos.
The combination of the old stone, water, and surrounding trees gives images a romantic, almost storybook feel. It's also a great spot for walking photos and those candid moments where you don't have to worry about looking directly at the camera.
The Rock Walls
The natural stone walls are another reason I love this location.
They add texture and depth to photos and create a more dramatic backdrop compared to a typical garden setting.
For this couples session, the rock wall gave us a completely different look from the photos taken around the bridge and water.
A Location That Doesn't Feel Like Every Other Park
One of my favorite things about Sunken Gardens is that it doesn't feel like your typical Indiana park.
Why I Love It as a Photographer
When I choose a photography location, I want somewhere that gives my clients room to move and interact.
I don't want every photo to look like it was taken in the exact same spot.
Sunken Gardens gives me plenty to work with — stone, water, greenery, bridges, pathways, and natural textures — all within one beautiful location.
And for couples, that means we can spend more time actually enjoying the session instead of constantly worrying about posing.
